Miguel Cotto, winner of previous fights against Shane Mosley and Alfonso Gomez, will try to defend his WBA Welterweight belt against top contender Antonio Margarito of Tijuana, Mexico on Saturday, July 26 27, 2008 at the MGM Grand Las Vegas in a fight tagged “The Battle”. Miguel Cotto, who hails from Puerto Rico and is nearing the fame of another Puerto Rican fighter Felix Trinidad, is unbeaten at 32-0, with 26 knockouts. On the other hand, Margarito is a former champion who has worked his way back up for a title contention. Cotto is known for his powerful body punches and sticky jabs, while Margarito is a toe-to-toe fighter who can exchange power punches. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the fight on Saturday night, which will be broadcasted on Pay-Per-View Television by HBO, will be an intense bullfight between two fighters in their prime.
The current odds for the Cotto vs Margarito fight currently favors Coto with a 3-to-1 advantage over Margarito. Media men and boxing fanatics agree on this and either predicts a knockout or a unanimous decision for Cotto, who is also in consideration for the pound-for-pound belt. My prediction for the winner is Technical Knockout in the middle rounds for Cotto, the result of heavy body punches thrown by Cotto.

Miguel Cotto Vs Antonio Margarito Rematch
By Liam Brindle / Lee Demain: After watching Miguel Cotto (36/29KO/2) Outbox and eventually drop Nicaraguan bomber Ricardo Mayorga ( 29/23KO/8/1) it’s apparent that Cotto, Under Manny Stewards watch, has improved significantly since the brutal beating at the hands of the p4p king Manny Paquiao, his footwork, movement and defence are much better and his jab has to be one of if not the best in boxing at the moment (perhaps second only to Vladimir Klitchko). But one thing that worries me in the aftermath of that fight, and with a potential rematch against plaster paws Margarito on the horizon, is does he have enough power at super welter to knock out the likes of Margarito?
Mayorga is a brawler who leaves his chin out to be hit and if Cotto can connect, yes he’ll drop anyone, but Margarito is a lot more skilled an operator than Mayorga, and with his relentless pressure Cotto will have to outbox Margarito to earn a UD, SD etc. Miguel Cotto Vs Antonio Margarito
As I said earlier his movement and defence have come on leaps and bounds so this isn’t out of the question, but I just think Margarito will be more suited to the weight than Cotto and thus Cotto is going to have to work damn hard to ware him down and those 12 rounds could end up looking more like 36 with the relentless Margarito walking you down after you’ve just hit him with a 6 punch combination, that sinister grin won’t help either, Look at what the Pacman did to him and he just wouldn’t stop walking.

I only see Cotto only having lost once really, and I think he feels the same.

I have a feeling that if this fight is made that we may well see the fastest, strongest, sharpest and more importantly the most focused Miguel Cotto that we have ever seen… add to the fact that ‘IF’ Margaritos gloves where in fact loaded, then this will have the opposite effect on Margarito…he will know that he cheated last time.

Here's what Bob Arum has to say about the possibility of De La Hoya fighting either Pacquiao or Cotto:
Dennis Principe: Well, of course Mr. Arum, one thing that makes you busy this days is one of the biggest fight is set to happen next week. Cotto vs Margarito. Of course Miguel Cotto is touted as the next superstar of the sports. But many beleives that Margarito would be a tough fight for Miguel.
Bob Arum: It would be a real tough fight. I mean, it's almost you have two Gattis who has the energy of Manny Pacquiao fight each other. This fighters are gonna go, go for as long as on one of them drops. They have such stamina Cotto vs Margarito Live stream ability. I mean, this is fierce some fight, you know how good a fight it is when each fighters calls the other guy a great fighter. Bob Arum: Well, I don't know, I can't read his mind. I really don't know. A lot will depend on how Cotto looks against Margarito. 'Cause Margarito he doesn't want to fight Margarito, 'cause he doesn't want to fight another Mexican. So I don't know but I think that there would be a good chance that Oscar would prefer the fight with Manny Pacquiao, I would agree with that.Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito.
Ronnie Nathanielsz: On Pacquiao and De La Hoya, if Mayweather Sr. gonna handle De La Hoya, and Roach handle Pacquiao, add another intriguing dimension to the fight. It's just Manny and Oscar
Bob Arum: Yes, it is, but Mayweather and Roach they were never met professionally as fighters.
Dennis Principe: How about the Promoters, I don't think there's a problem with you and Oscar, Mr. Arum?
Bob Arum: No. When the contracts are drawn out for the fight, and promoters have their signs printed, one promoter have to show up in the ring, you know, lose that animosity to maximize your revenue.
Ronnie Nathanielsz: Mr. Arum, obviously Freddie Roach said something which I think is little true that Oscar feels a little bitter about Manny Pacquiao because he signed up with you.
Bob Arum: That is not true. Oscar knows that.
Ronnie Nathanielsz: That's not true?
Bob Arum: No, no. Oscar is a businessman. And no, there's not truth to it, as far as mentioning the fight. It makes sense to make the fight in a good economic terms. That is not Oscar at all, trust me.
Ronnie Nathanielsz: As Freddie Roach said if anybody can get anything done that gentleman is Bob Arum. And I'm sure you can get it done.
Bob Arum: Well, let's see first. I haven't gone to the full options yet 'cause I have to talk to Manny. And I have the opporunity next week, meanwhile we have a rest period 'cause Richard Schaeffer who does business for Golden Boy will be leaving tonight for vacation and won't be back until the Cotto fight. So we have a little time to catch our breath, and talk to De La Hoya, before we get down to negotiating. 'Cause that's the way I'm being directed to go.
Ronnie Nathanielsz: You said yesterday, with the changes of lifestyle with Pacquiao, thousands upon thousands greeted him when he went to the provinces typhoon and gave away money and food near a Catholic church. Manny attend to the needy, you know it was a tremendous gesture on his part, the people responded to him in a big way. And some people said "even if I don't get anything from you, seeing you would be good enough.
Bob Arum: Yes, he's a real caring person, and he is certainly so in the Philippines. And remember he didn't started at the top, 'cause he started form a very humble beginning. He is a truly the man to beat.
Ronnie Nathanielsz: And you know, the thing about him Mr. Arum is that about 6 to 8 years ago, when he was just a young kid on a show that I did, and he told Juan Rosario and myself, I want to enter politics and public service because I want to help my people. And then, he said that a long, long time ago, long before he was a champion.
Bob Arum: Well, I think certainly that's one of his goals. Certainly that burns in his heart, and that is why he's the person and in a lot of ways that's the fighter that he is. Because he has a heart and bigger than his body. That makes a great fighter and a great person and future great politician.
